Headstones - Come On

Headstones! The Headstones? I'm not really sure which one is correct so I'll just do both. Either way, Hugh Dillon's kick-ass group is one of the most awesome and under-appreciated Canadian rock groups ever. At least according to me. Sadly their last album came out in 2002, but they did have a little mini-reunion of sorts a couple months ago. So while some of you are reading about who whispered what to who at some boring rich person's ridiculous pomp and circumstance theater production, I'm rocking out to some Headstones. Right now.

Holy cheese and rice there's a new Beastie Boys video out, and a new album coming out on May 2nd! Big it up! So pumped... this new single is awesome, the video is wicked awesome, and I can't wait to listen to the album. These guys are all mid-40s now and still rockin' it, so there's hope for me yet. Q-Tip - Breathe And Stop

Tuesday is a good day for hip-hop. Mondays usually are two, and sometimes Wednesdays, but today is Tuesday so let's worry about them other days later. I've been working on a new track over the past couple of days. Nothing epic, but just a quick little ditty that I wanted to try and finish real quick like. Hopefully it'll be done tomorrow, or at least by Thursday. In the meantime I've been groovin' to Q-Tip's great album "Amplified". Hadn't listened to it all the way through in ages, so long that I'd forgotten what I was missing. Give it a go. Here's a boss track from it.

Gerard Smith was the quiet bass player from the band TV On The Radio for the past six years. Sadly only a few short days ago he passed on after a relatively short battle with lung cancer. Best wishes to the band in the future. No much other news today except that the NSA has made public some documents which suggest radio communication with extraterrestrial intelligence. Thanks to everyone who came out to party at the Phoenix last night. Judging by the fact that none of you would leave at the end, I'm guessing it was good times had by all. It was a good day to relax and get a little fresh air today, and tonight I think it'll be a nice quiet one. Here's a funky video from SebastiAn that Noematus posted a while back. I really dig the production, and I'm on the look out for an instrumental version if anyone's got one. Have a good one.

Good day for hip-hop I think. Roots Manuva is a wicked rapper and producer from the UK who's been reppin' it for more than a decade now. Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche

I spent the best part of yesterday working on my music archive. When you have as much music as I do it all has to be meticulously labeled and organized or you just can't find anything when you need it. I suppose I haven't quite reported about Cuba yet... so I'll try to sum it up in these few words:

Hola mojito, una cerveza por favor, dos agua, fiesta siesta, cuba libre, tequila boom boom, purple rain train, muy caliente, turkey vulture, sugar cane, pineapple, ham & cheese, salty barrages, over-juiced mermaids, fondo blanco, quieren tocarme, cohiba, senorita, muchacho, muchos gracias, buenos noches, feliz cumpleanos, adios amigos, viva la revolucion!

This is a stunning video titled "The Mountain", put together from time-lapse photography by Terje Sorgjerd and music by Ludovico Einaudi. I was just going to link to it, but it's so amazing I thought I'd just feature it instead. There's another 6 minute version of it here to different music, but it's just the same video looped twice. I highly recommend putting this on HD and full-screening it.

KO - Capable

Well the full Cuban reaction will have to wait until tomorrow, just not enough time in the day to get everything done, and I'm still not quite recovered from the adventure. Here's some more sweet tunage from Toronto's KO, who now include my fellow Scarborough musicos Mike and Geoff on bass and guitar respectively. You might also recognize them from the Rebel Emergency. Sweet tunage, I'd like to see them live in action, I guess this is as close as it gets for now.

Barenaked Ladies - Lovers In A Dangerous Time

This time tomorrow I'll be at the airport in Moncton getting ready to head off to Cuba. Exciting times. Given that I may or may not get one last post in depending on how late I sleep in, but hopefully I'll at least post a couple tunes.

Ashley posted the classic Barenaked Ladies cover of Bruce Cockburn's original yesterday, so I dug out this nice live clip. Ed and Steven were in the same school program as I was, albeit a few years earlier, so it was great to see them find success the way they did. Sadly the band lost a bit of its edge in recent years and Steven has since left the band, but hopefully they'll have a little reunion one day. Either way, they were great, and this is a great track. Enjoy.

I was too hung over to post yesterday because Saturday night at the Phoenix was a riot. Thanks for all who came out, whoever you were. I hope I was entertaining. I hear I was, at least sorta. I had to prepare my body for Wednesday's trip to Cuba, which will no doubt involve the consumption of many many mojitos. Not much to say now as I am on vacation and preparing for the flight, which means laundry, packing, meditation, last minute tanning, and a couple more gym sessions. Good times.

John Larkin, aka Scatman John, will forever be remembered for this 1995 hit, and not for his rather more reserved performances like this one. John had a bad stutter and was a jazz and blues pianist more many years before getting into the dance music scene at the ripe old age of 52. This song was actually meant to inspire other people with speech impediments, but most people just remember the hook. John passed away in 1999 from lung cancer, but the Scatman lives forever!
