Obama's United Nations Address

The President gave an excellent speech today in New York in front of the UN general assembly. It's hard to argue with anything he said but I do take issue with one point:

"True democracy demands that citizens cannot be thrown in jail because of what they believe, and businesses can be opened without paying a bribe. It depends on the freedom of citizens to speak their minds and assemble without fear; on the rule of law and due process that guarantees the rights of all people."

I hope he realises the hypocrisy of that statement given the treatment of those during the Occupy and G20 protests, and the abject failure to prosecute any of the criminals on Wall Street. Let's hope that over the next four years his words are more than mere rhetoric, because the last four have been decidedly underwhelming in that regard. The honeymoon is over Mr. President, the world wants results. Will the real Barack Obama please stand up?

Watch the full thirty minute speech below. A transcript is available here.

The Great Awakening

You probably don't need to watch this, just another revolution video. It's a good one though, so maybe it's worth the four and a half minutes.

Patrick Byrne takes on Goldman Sachs & Merrill Lynch

There's a pretty important legal case starting on Monday in San Francisco. Patrick Byrne, the CEO of Overstock.com, has filed a RICO Act lawsuit against some of the big names on Wall St. and he claims to have evidence that will be irrefutable in a court of law. It will be very interesting to see what happens in this case, and you can get a brief idea of what it's about in the following videos. Basically he's accusing Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch of racketeering! I love that word.

EDIT: I just read that the trial has been moved to March 5, 2012. I hate waiting.

Bloomberg exposes huge Fed bailout scandal

In the wake of the startling revelation that the US Federal Reserve actually handed out more than $7.7 TRILLION dollars in the 2008 bailouts, more than 10 times the previously disclosed $700 billion, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich blasted the decision and is calling for monetary reform. What's even more startling is that this was reported by the same news source in 2008, and it was never followed up in the mainstream media. This is flat out criminal. As largely politically and economically apathetic Canadians we often think we are immune to problems in the American banking industry. I hate to say it but I think 2012 is going to be a very, very long year, and a very rude awakening for a lot of people.

The connection between US Feds and Monsanto

These are fun. I wonder who's next?

A note for President Obama

From a protestor attending a speech in New Hampshire.

Mr. President:
Over 4000 peaceful protesters
have been arrested.
While banksters continue
to destroy the economy with impunity.
You must stop the assault
on our 1st amendment rights.
Your silence sends a message
that police brutality is acceptable.
Banks got bailed out.
We got sold out.

Disgraced UC Davis chancellor does walk of shame

That's just about as shameful as it gets, ladies and gentlemen. I have no sympathy for you, Linda Katehi.

Retired police Capt. Ray Lewis joins Occupy Wall St

Kind of a lame interview, but he makes some interesting points nonetheless. Apparently Capt. Lewis has since been arrested, and released.

Dorli Rainey, 84 year old pepper-sprayed occupier

The important message here? There isn't a problem with young people, there isn't a problem with old people. There's a problem, period, and something needs to change.

Keith Olbermann blasts NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg

This is quite possibly my favorite Olbermann rant, and he is absolutely correct.

Goddamn Batman.

Police officers beating protesters at UCal Berkeley

Even more senseless violence from police officers at UCal Berkeley. To all the GOOD cops out there: please tell the rest to stop being such assholes.
