Between The Buried And Me - Astral Body

Right, enough of that hipster stuff. Here's some proper progressive guitar massiveness.

Coheed & Cambria - Domino The Destitute

Well it's been a while, blog. I've been busy working on my own tracks, and took a little vacation. Might as well bring this back with a bang. World premiere of the new Coheed track. Thank you me.

The Mars Volta - The Malkin Jewel

This is the first single from the sweet new album, and it's a frontrunner in the fan-made video competition.

Jimmy Swift Band - When Worlds Collide

I remember my first JSB experience, way back in the day. Well, sorta. Bits and pieces really. Mostly a blur, but what a blur! If colour could stream out from the band and the instruments and the sound itself, and to be fair it often does, there would be a rainbow of energy so emancipating you would think you had slid down straight into the pot of lucky charms and had absorbed all their greatness in one fell swoop. There have rarely been live performers more spiritually liberating than these guys. I could go on, but we have music to listen to.

These guys rocked the UNB campus last night (sadly I missed it) but the amazing Aaron Collier and colossal Craig Mercer will instead don their Scientists of Sound outfits and obliterate our senses with the pumping madness of Daft Punk's "Homework" album once again. For those who missed the last show, read my review here, and for the love of all things awesome get out and see this show. Or don't. And be the one who missed out who has to listen to me and everyone else saying how freakin' awesome it was. Here's some JSB to get us through the day until we hit up the Capital.

That's mystical Mike MacDougall keeping it steady on the 7-string monster bass.

Snot - Stoopid

It was another sweet metal show last night at the Capital. The headliners were The Daisy Anthesis from Saint John, and I have to say they were pretty impressive. They're a trio, all clearly talented musicians, and they have great stage presence as well. Expect big things from these guys in the future.

Meanwhile, Jarrett played some Snot, something I hadn't heard or thought about in a while. It was a great reminder of how awesome those guys were, and it's a damn shame that their lead singer Lynn Strait left us in a car accident in 1998. There was an air of greatness about them.

DJ Disciple vs Prok & Fitch - Redlight

Completely unrelated awesomeness.

Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

STP have a new single out. It kinda sucks actually. A big letdown considering their mostly awesome stuff in their early days. At one time they were one of my favourite bands. Oh how the mighty have fallen. This is from their stunning 1993 appearance on the MTV Unplugged series. It wasn't released in audio version, but if you look around the interweb for a couple minutes you can probably find it.

Where did it go Scott?

The Gandharvas - The First Day Of Spring

ru·mi·nate   /ˈruməˌneɪt/ [roo-muh-neyt]
verb,-nat·ed, -nat·ing. –verb (used without object)

1. to chew the cud, as a ruminant.
2. to meditate or muse; ponder.
–verb (used with object)
3. to chew again or over and over.
4. to meditate on; ponder.

The Gandharvas are spirits. They make magical, mystical music, connecting the gods to mere mortals. They also happened to put together a few nifty tunes for you and me, particularly this one, that won Song of the Year in 1994 from The Edge. It's the first day of spring. So don't just sit there and ruminate. It's a beautiful day outside, and there's no way of knowing how long it will last.

Rich says spring started yesterday afternoon. Whatever. Today is the first full day. I'll take the technical decision victory on this one.

Deftones - Rocket Skates

When it comes to heavy rock with a dash of thrash and two bites of a metal sandwich, nobody does it quite like Deftones. These guys were really loud when they first came out, then absolutely ripped the music scene to pieces with White Pony ten long years ago. After fading a little into obscurity and releasing two cool but generally less awesome albums, and having their star bass player Chi Cheng badly injured in a car accident, they have pushed through the adversity and finished a new album, Diamond Eyes, tentatively scheduled for a May 18 release. Can't wait for this one. This song is the first release from the album, and I have to say it's pretty cool, sounds very White Pony-ish on first listen. Chino's unique vocal talents are, as usual, a focal point.

Teeth-gritting awesome.

Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3

I stand corrected. As much as Bonnaroo looks awesome, Coachella looks even better. Could it be that I'm actually completely out of touch with the goings-on of the massive summer festivals? Could there yet be ever better ones to venture to? The plot thickens.

One of the main reasons that I think the Coachella has a better lineup is that besides having many of the great acts signed up for Bonnaroo, it also has some other bands that I absolutely love. First and foremost has to be Coheed & Cambria. Probably my favourite band right now, and I can just imagine being in the audience and seeing the kind of mayhem I've posted below. This is probably the greatest intro to a music DVD I've ever seen. Actually I can't really imagine being there. That's why I need to see it in person.

Mind-blowing DVD. By the way they have a new track out for anyone interested...

Mastodon - Sleeping Giant

Well I'm on a bit of a metal kick since Monday, and here's one of my favourite recent-ish metal videos. Mastodon! What a band name. If that doesn't say "kick ass sound crushing metal mayhem monstrosity music" in one gigantic word, I don't know what does. Although I suppose Slayer wasn't bad either... but I digress.

Awesome!

Sepultura - Ratamahatta

I went to Metal Monday last night, and unfortunately I missed Manlord and We, The Undersigned, but I did catch Iron Giant. Awesome stuff, great show. Metal fans tend to be badly stereotyped because they wear black and spikey stuff and have lots of tattoos and piercings. I find them to be some of the nicest people around, very soft spoken and of good humour. It seems to me that it's better to get your emotion out at a show or at home listening to some kickass tunes than taking it out on your fellow drivers on the highway, or the guy down at Tim Horton's.

Anyway I could never really classify myself as a metalhead per se, but I do have a lot of time for some really awesome LOUD! music. Really it's metal and industrial that got me into the electronic genre in the first place. In 1996 Sepultura came out with "Roots" that was an awesome follow up to earlier efforts and the last album to feature epic vocalist Max Cavalera. My favourite track is this one, which happened to have a sweet stop-motion Tool-esque video that I remember catching on Muchmusic. Oh, can you imagine? A metal video on Much? Thems were the days...
