Black Pistol Fire - Speak Of The Devil

I like this loud business. Let's mix in some blues with that grunge.

Sunday, February 11, 2018

Saturday, February 10, 2018

Anderson Paak - Come Down

It's Saturday. That means it's time to get down. Shout outs to G-Load.

Friday, February 9, 2018

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats - NPR Tiny Desk Concert

High quality Friday afternoon sunshine sociable music. I could go for a pint.

1. I Need Never Get Old
2. Look It Here
3. I've Been Failing You
4. Mellow Out

Young Fathers - In My View

New album on the way from these cats. Did you know they're from Scotland? This new track reminds me a bit of Massive Attack in the production.

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Kimbra - Human

I posted a song that apparently featured Kimbra in it the other day though I'm not super convinced. Haven't actually heard any new music from her in a while. New album apparently coming in April. Looking forward to it, always find her work interesting if not great.

Tuesday, February 6, 2018

Ravyn Lenae - Sticky

First song I've ever heard from this artist. Super phat.

Monday, February 5, 2018

Hey Rosetta! - I've Been Asleep For A Long, Long Time

This is supposed to be Metal Monday. Well let's be honest for a moment, there are no rules around here. Rules are for the birds. Please direct any complaints you might have to this brick wall.

I slept for about 13 hours last night. Straight. On the couch. TKO'd. No dinner. No Superbowl. No writing. Suffice to say I was tired. Sleep didn't really happen for me apart from a couple hours nap here for there from about Thursday. Starting to think I have too much on the go.

Today is catch-up day. El Bloggo is now good to go. Sort of. Still have a few Best Of's to get to further down the road.

In the meantime Tim Baker & Co. are bringing me back to life. Hope they're enjoying whatever it is they've been up to since December. Probably a lot of not much.

B00ty - Loosen Up

Saturday. Dance. Chunes. I dare you not to boogie.

Friday, February 2, 2018

Gowan - Strange Animal

Throwback Thursday.

I wanted to post the original 1985 video, alas I couldn't embed it so....

2006 live piano version in the Glenn Gould Theatre it is.

P.S. it's February.

Monday, January 29, 2018

Matt Wells - You Walk Behind

I didn't have an appropriately heavy track cued up for Metal Monday, so here's a throwback acoustic rendition of a dope track I posted once upon a time.

Sunday, January 28, 2018

Zoot Woman - Ordinary Face

I was gonna post the music video for this track, but then found this acoustic version. There's a bunch of them on their channel.

Saturday, January 27, 2018

Boney M - Gotta Go Home

It's Saturday. That means it's time for dancin'. Let's do it disco. If you think you might have heard that hook in another song more recently, you're gat dang right.

Friday, January 26, 2018

Shogun - Vulcan

Wooooo this Scotsman spittin' fiya! Warning, PG-13 language.

Thursday, January 25, 2018

Chousand - Wizard Wig

What happened to these guys? This song was simple but catchy.

Wednesday, January 24, 2018

Fader Creep - Reality Hits You Hard Bro

Far and away the best 'remix' of George Lindell's ridiculous recollection of the incident in Arizona. Always enjoyed Fader Creep's videos, a bit dark and well constructed.

Tuesday, January 23, 2018

Arga Bileg - Bayad

How about some groovy neo-traditional Mongolian jazz?

Monday, January 22, 2018

The Distillers - Drain The Blood

If we're gonna post a cover, might as well post the originals. Had almost forgotten about them. Are they metal enough? I'm gonna say they qualify.

Sunday, January 21, 2018

Lauren Wakefield - Bittersweet

Came across this talented artist completely by surprise. The first video was this cover song which was pretty decent. This is an original. Great voice.

Saturday, January 20, 2018

Louis La Roche - All I Had

What is it about stage names? How much does the headline influence the song's impact? Is it merely for purposes of attraction? Would this track be any less funky if it was released by Brett Ewels?

I don't know the answers to these, as they seem by and large subjective. Gotta admit though, if Louis La Roche had a sound this would be it.

Thursday, January 18, 2018

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

The Cranberries - Ode To My Family

Was just a few weeks ago that I posted their biggest song. Suppose this could have been posted yesterday, but the other track was already queued up when I heard the news. A terrible shame. Rest easy Dolores.

Monday, January 15, 2018

Nigel Hall Band - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

It's too bad there isn't a soundboard recording of this somewhere. At least none that I know of... but there is another video of this exact performance. Maybe someone could do some doctoring? Really enjoy this arrangement of a timeless classic.

Sunday, January 14, 2018

Dreamcar - Kill For Candy

The weekend isn't over yet. Let's keep the tempo high. These guys are a 'super-group' made up of members from No Doubt and AFI.

Saturday, January 13, 2018

Azari & III - Manic

It's Saturday, and you know what that means. Time for funky beats.

Friday, January 12, 2018

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

Tuesday, January 9, 2018

Redman - Da Goodness

Such a great track, butchered by censorship. Somebody rip the proper audio and mix it with the video because this is just horrific.

Monday, January 8, 2018

Heilung - Krigsgaldr

Metal Monday. Viking opera? From Denmark.

Watch the whole LIFA concert here.

Sunday, January 7, 2018

BRNS - Many Chances

Had to post this for the video alone. Turns out I like the song too.

Saturday, January 6, 2018

The Avalanches - Because I'm Me

It's Saturday. We need some dancing music. I got just the one.

Friday, January 5, 2018

Thursday, January 4, 2018

Washed Out - Burn Out Blues

It's the first Thursday of 2018. Are we allowed to feel burned out yet?

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Barenaked Ladies - Break Your Heart

My favorite song from a band that died unceremoniously in 2009. I debated posting this fairly recent version by Steven Page but then thought it would be more appropriate to post the full band in their heyday.

'Zat You Santa Claus?

Well, we made it. Somehow. One post for every day since October 1. Not too shabby. Tomorrow is normally when I would start my 'Best of 2017' list but sadly I just haven't had time to get through enough albums yet, so putting together a rush job just wouldn't cut it. I'm going to have to play catch-up instead and go back in time to finish it later. Hopefully I'll find the motivation somehow.

So... with that in mind there won't be any more posts on El Bloggo until January 1. Then, a new challenge. One post a day until.... let's make it to March and see what happens. Until then I leave you with this classic. Nobody does it quite like Louis, but this is a pretty darn good live rendition. Aw heck, we'll post a little bonus beats action at the end too. It is Christmas after all.

BONUS BEATS

Louis Armstrong - 'Zat You Santa Claus? [The Heavy Remix]

Have a safe and happy holidays kids.

Saturday, December 23, 2017

John Ozila - Funky Boogie

This is the 'Lipton Ice Tea Mix' by Pilooski.

Michal 'Samurai' Zalewski providing the slick moves.

Friday, December 22, 2017

FKJ & Masego - Tadow

Who? No idea. Quality though, I'll need to hear more thanks.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Didn't It Rain

Amazing performer who is headed to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. This is from 1964 in Manchester, part of the American Folk Blues Festival's UK tour.

Sunday, December 17, 2017

Boston Pops - Star Wars Theme

I saw the new movie. It made me a little sad. There was so much they could have done with it that they didn't.... and much they did that they shouldn't have. Without getting into specifics, my interest in the next movie has greatly diminished. I remember Star Wars for the sense of wonder it gave me as a kid in the original trilogy. The new movie just doesn't invoke the same feelings.

Saturday, December 16, 2017

Run The Jewels - Call Ticketron

Brand new video. RTJ3 wasn't as good as RTJ2, but it's still high level dope.

Friday, December 15, 2017

Tom Wilson - Shine

One of my personal favorite Canadian songwriters. A classic from his Junkhouse days.

Thursday, December 14, 2017

Postmodern Jukebox - Crazy

Haven't been that excited about the covers Mr. Bradlee has been doing in a while but P-Dubs sent me this one today and I have to admit it's pretty good. The clarinet solo by Chloe Feoranzo is a nice touch.

The original, of course, is by Gnarls Barkley. who sadly haven't released a new album in nearly a decade. Yes, this fact is as shocking to me as it is to you. Here I was thinking it had been a few years.... 2008 is now ancient history!

Wednesday, December 13, 2017

Monobody - Curry Courier Career

Here's eight minutes of awesome to help you forget that it's Wednesday.

Tuesday, December 12, 2017

Sean Price - Planet Apes

I feel yesterday's offering wasn't angry enough. I offer this beast to atone.

WARNING: Graphic video ahead. Hide yo kids. Also: earmuffs.

Monday, December 11, 2017

Coheed & Cambria - Wake Up

I was going to post something loud. It is Metal Monday after all. In lieu of monster riffs I've opted for some acoustic Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever. I trust you'll forgive me.

Sunday, December 10, 2017

Saturday, December 9, 2017

Friday, December 8, 2017

Angles 9 - Pacemaker

Funky Fresh Friday. This is some serious downtown my zoot suit is better than yours get outta the damn way comin' through to get you funktacular jazz.

Thursday, December 7, 2017

Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice

Throwdown Thursday? Can't go wrong with Norman Cook and a little dance number from Christopher Walken. How does this not have 100 bazillion views?

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Monday, December 4, 2017

Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill

Here's one I'm surprised I haven't already posted. He's 61 in this performance. Pretty funny at the end when he almost takes out the conductor with a giant hanging camera.

Sunday, December 3, 2017

Ria Mae - Ooh Love

Heard her on the CBC the other day. Kind of embarrassed to say I didn't recognize her stuff. Color me impressed. This acoustic performance might be even better.

(one extra chilly bonus beet please)

Broken
(feat. Tegan Quin)

Saturday, December 2, 2017

#1 Dads - Two Weeks

This is a shockingly good cover that blistering FKA Twigs track. One of my favorite covers over the past couple years.

There's so much to be interested in here... it's ambitious. This is not an easy song to perform and the original is untouchable, but I really like the approach - they've captured the feel of the song while still keeping it fresh. Great job.

Friday, December 1, 2017

Gigamesh - History

French disco house funk supreme. Big fan of Matthew Masurka's stuff. Can't believe I haven't posted more. First got into him when I heard his remix of Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me". That gives me an idea...

Bonus beats?

Thursday, November 30, 2017

Radiohead - Man Of War

So apparently this was recorded during the OK Computer setups and just didn't make the album. Which would make it about 20 years ago. It's a bit crazy to think how well an unreleased b-side has held up over time. Heads of the radio indeed.

Sunday, November 26, 2017

Björk - Blissing Me

She's now 52 years old. Still making fresh and relevant music.

Saturday, November 25, 2017

All Them Witches - The Death Of Coyote Woman

These guys are real good. Hint of The Doors about them. Everything is on point here, love the depth from the Rhodes. Think this would be killer live.

Friday, November 24, 2017

Beck - Colors

New album. Early opinion: decent. This track is funky enough.

Thursday, November 23, 2017

R.E.M. - Strange Currencies

These guys just released a new re-mastered version of 'Automatic From The People', a classic album that's a must for any half-serious vinyl collection. This song, of course, is not from that album. It's still great though so I picked it instead.

Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Toto - Africa

I've posted this one before (like 7 years ago) but never this version so we're making an exception. This is a soundboard recording of the performance at Budokan on May 19, 1982. Nice job adding a touch of reverb to make it sound like a stage recording. This is definitely the best live cut of this song out there, no lip syncing here folks.

Tuesday, November 21, 2017

Monday, November 20, 2017

Jesse Stewart - Marauder

This is one of the greatest solo performances of all time. Fact.

Sunday, November 19, 2017

Saturday, November 18, 2017

Armand van Helden - The Funk Phenomena

This is actually some dope mashup of a boss tune. Nice work on the video too. It's Saturday. Put on your skates and let's have a dance party.

Friday, November 17, 2017

The Cranberries - Zombie

I haven't had much sleep this week, and the weekend isn't looking promising either.

Thursday, November 16, 2017

Timecop 1983 - Moving On

You don't get much variation from this dude, but he's damn good as what he does.

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

The Day - Grow

Don't know anything about this artist, but this tune is pretty smooth.

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

Marker Starling - Hue And Cry

aka Mantler. I like that name better. Still makes cool music.

Monday, November 13, 2017

Clutch - Electric Worry

It's Monday. Let's get loud. Southern metal rock supreme loud.

Sunday, November 12, 2017

Dion DiMucci & Paul Simon - New York Is My Home

I first heard this as a 'bonus track' on the 'deluxe' version of the Stranger To Stranger album. Apparently it was actually released as a single previously. It's a good tune that would have been served better without the drum track in the background.

As an aside, the concept of 'bonus' tracks and 'deluxe' versions of albums grinds my gears. Either it's part of the album or it's not. If it's not, release it separately and leave it that way. 'Deluxe' implies you've left something out of the original release, like it's the 'cheapskate' version.

Marketers, you suck.

Chromeo - Juice

Big fan of the early stuff from these guys. I feel like they've drifted away from prime groovy in the last couple years, but this first single from the upcoming album is promising. Keep them juices flowin'.

Sunday, November 5, 2017

Jinx The Cat - Season Of Change

Great psychedelic jam band out of New Brunswick. If you get a chance, check 'em out live. This video is from almost five years ago, so they've evolved a bit since then.

Saturday, November 4, 2017

Knower - Overtime

These guys are relatively new to me. I like them. A lot.

Friday, November 3, 2017

Thursday, November 2, 2017

Pond - Zond

Wait wait! Don't put your costumes away just yet! Check out the new Star Wars trailer and then dance around like a weirdo in space.

Wednesday, November 1, 2017

Annie Lennox - Love Song For A Vampire

I made it. One month of posting every day. It's been a long, long time since I managed that. Onwards and upwards. Let's close out the Halloween festivities with this gem from dear Annie. Think this could be pretty epic with a live orchestra.
