Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide

Remember this classic? Here's the Maestro himself with K-Os and Shad rocking out earlier this year in front of the lamest crowd in history.

Small Sins - Déjà Vu

I saw this video in the preview for the TRON movie, proof indeed that marketing is everything. I've since listened to the full album. Now I remember why marketing can only go so far. Well... judging by the top 40 countdowns these days I might be wrong there. Anywho, this is a catchy little ditty from Small Sins out of Toronto. The video, on the other hand, is pretty crappy. I know they had a small budget, but let's get serious. This seems to be a recurring theme with these guys.

In fact, these guys are almost the perfect reason why make believe pop artists exist. Not bad song writers, decent producers, but singing and actually performing the songs, not so much. I thought this was easily the best song on the album, the others were fairly forgettable. Maybe it's just me. I dunno. I find the guy's voice kind of whiny and didn't like his use of the chorus effect to make it more whiny. He gets away with it in this song, but I didn't think it worked in the rest. See what you think.

Strange random cameo from K-Os to boot.

K-Os - Sunday Morning

Did I mention how I prefer contemporary Canadian hip-hop to American rap? This is a generalisation, and there exceptions of course, but for the most part I find that, for whatever reason, Canadian hip-hip is superior to them guys from below the 49th. Kevin Brereton, aka K-Os, has been leading the charge for a few years now, and despite K'naan not being a fan, I am one. I saw him live here in NB a couple years back, and it was a great performance. I wanted to post a live version of "Emcee Murdah", but there aren't any good videos out there, so this will have to do.

Big Black Lincoln - Pimpin' Life

Stickin' around Toronto we find Big Black Lincoln, featuring one Karl Amani Wailoo, aka Saukrates, in this dope track from 2006. I went to band camp with Amani waaaay back in the day, that's right, band camp. He was a pretty talented violin player back then, and he's a pretty talented producer and rapper these days. He's most recently been spotted in a video with K-Os, but hopefully we'll hear some fresh new cuts from him in the near future.

Rascalz - Top Of The World

I've got an annoying ear infection right now, which is setting my production schedule back for a couple days (hopefully!), but it gave me a chance to pause and consider, amongst all this Canadian pride at the Olympics, how many people realise how many great Canadian artists are out there. This is particularly apparent to me in the hip-hop genre. For whatever reason I just feel that our guys pump out some mad tunes that I like moreso than most of the American stuff.

Of course this is a terrible generalisation and there are great hip-hop artists all over the world, but I'm just trying to use this as a segue into the fact that next week is going to be Toronto Hip-Hop week. Each day I'll post a different kick-ass tune from some of the badass acts out of my home town, the ol' 416. Until then, I leave you with this classic west coast flavour from the Rascalz, probably Vancouver's greatest hip-hop export.
