Deadmau5 - Fn Pig
An orchestral remix slash visual project by Michael Gold. I think it works brilliantly.
Arca - Held Apart
I'm heading on an impromptu journey to Toronto tomorrow, so I may not get to updating this until I return on Monday night, but hopefully I'll fit in one more post before I go. Here's some visual treats for you to wind down this hectic Wednesday.

Fly Golden Eagle - Horse's Mouth
I get the feeling these guys wish they were rockin' out in a different era...
Alt-J - Every Other Freckle
New album out from this crazy fella, looking forward to giving it a listen.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - Retreat!
...and I was doing so well... It was a busy weekend, and there'll be a few more on the way but I'll try to get this done every day anyway. Crazy news about Jian, big evening in store for Toronto, and I just ate a mango. I think we'll skip the metal today and go straight for the soul.

Thea, Rose Ryot, and Jaw - Drink
I have no idea who these people are but this is clearly serious business.

Hey Rosetta! - Soft Offering (For The Oft Suffering)
I'm excited to hear this new album. I have a copy but haven't listened to it yet, weird huh? Anyway I'll get to it today. The last release kind of left me a little underwhelmed, but I'm enjoying this new track. It's a little different sounding, kind of a mix of Peter Gabriel and early (i.e. good) Coldplay. More of a rock feel rather than orchestral. That's not at all a bad thing. Check it out.
Wintersleep - Jaws Of Life
These guys have just completely sunk into oblivion. They had so much promise and somewhere the edge got just fell away. Mismanagement maybe? This is from their 2005 album, a brilliant offering, and one that had, unbeknownst to me, a plethora of videos released, all seemingly directed by Sean Wainsteim. Maybe he was a friend of a friend, or a label hiree, but I just feel like every one of them completely missed the mark. As if they were more to act as a show reel for what tricks the director had rather than actually having anything to do with the music.
Sam Roberts - Shapeshifters
Let's do some Canadian rock today. These guys from Montreal are always hit and miss for me. This latest album was really upbeat, rocky, but I just felt a tad over-produced. The drum tracks sounded kind of dry and stale, and the vocals sound processed and squashed and chorused to death. But hey, it's a catchy tune and I like the video. It's probably much better live.

Rustie - Hover Traps
No idea how this fella went from fresh stuff like this to his massively underwhelming new album, but there it is. Let's get some mid-week electro-funk on the go.

Foxes - Don't Stop Me Now
I'm not really into her other stuff but this was an interesting version of a classic.
Mike Masse and Jeff Hull - Paranoid Android
Definitely the best cover of this difficult song that I've come across.

Jane Jupiter - Higher
New pseudonym for Kid Sister. Trademark funky production. Bouncy and sparkly. Solid.
The 2 Bears - Not This Time
I'll be honest, the name flew right over my head until I saw this video. Now I get it. Anyway I'm enjoying the classic disco groove. Smooth and summery.

John Coltrane, Stan Getz, and Oscar Peterson - Hackensack
Jazz, damnit, jazz! Germany, 1960. Paul Chambers on bass, Jimmy Cobb drums.

Weezer - Back To The Shack
An awful lot of people are proclaiming this their best album since Pinkerton. An awful lot of people are really desperate for their kids to understand how good they were. I've listened to the new release, it's ok, nothing more. Not a patch on their first two albums. I'll give it a couple more listens, but let's face the facts: the good ol' days are gone.
Headstones - Tweeter And The Monkey Man
Would somebody PLEASE upload some decent quality videos of these guys to YouTube? It's 2014 and they're one of the best damn Canadian rock bands of all time. Instead we have to put up with this fan-made rubbish. Better than nothing I suppose. For the record, this version of the song is way better than the original.

Saul Williams - DNA / Coded Language
The one and only, live over the streets of downtown T-Dot. Awesome.
Shane Koyczan & Hannah Epperson - Remember How We Forgot
This fellow is absolutely amazing. See him live! Big ups to Yellowknife.
Prince Ea - Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?
Good day for some spoken word stuff. This one has been making the rounds lately. I don't necessarily agree with all his points. Online social media has its place. Too many people walking around with their faces on their phones though. On that we can agree.

Stone Temple Pilots - Sex Type Thing
I'm not religious so I admit that I have no idea what the different between Easter Sunday and Easter Monday is except that Monday is a holiday. Anyway it doesn't matter, what matters is we need some almost-metal grunge in our lives. Obviously.

Underworld - Saved From The Cutting Room Floor
It's Easter Sunday. Get off that damned internet! But since you're here...

The Saturday Beat
I missed yesterday, and today is another busy day so I'll make up for it later.
Really diggin' this new deep house beauty.
Groove Armada gettin' all techy these days.
Big fan of Tim Green's work. Nice minimalish remix.
Solid tribal percussion happenin' right here.
More groovy latin tech house.

Talking Heads - Life During Wartime
I posted a remix of these guys the other day but realised I hadn't actually posted any of their songs yet. Crazy. Let's fix that now.

Boozoo Bajou - Jan Mayen
It's pretty much impossible to follow that one up... but we'll try our best anyway.

Iron Reagan - Miserable Failure
These guys are not from Toronto, but they do have long hair and are metal as.....
Skull Fist - You're Gonna Pay
New video from another great hair metal band from Toronto. If you have a chance to see them live, DO IT! They put on a seriously great show. Hella nice guys too.
Harem Scarem - No Justice
Metal Monday! This one is bridging the gap maybe between metal and rock. It's pretty much hair metal at its best. The song comes from a hugely under-appreciated Mood Swings album out of Toronto from back in '93. Every song rocks, it's easily my favorite hair band album of all time. I actually can't believe I haven't posted this before...

Blind Melon - Mouthful Of Cavities
Ya, I know, I just posted one by these guys, but whatevs. I miss 'em.
Young Buffalo - Upstairs
It's raining, overcast, pretty much yuck outside and I'm a bit zonked after running around for a couple hours. Note to self - stop getting out of shape! Here's some acoustic jams.

The Saturday Beat
Running a bit late, but hopefully you're a nighthawk like me.
CLASSIC mid-'90s drum and bass. Killer track.
Absolutely essential old school track in any house collection.
Soulful deep progressive tech from a prime time producer.
Just one of several dope remixes of this tech banger.
I actually had no idea this remix existed until right this second.

Kode9 & The Spaceape - The Devil Is A Liar
Good segue into this track. I was actually going to post it yesterday, but then didn't, and afterwards found out that The Spaceape aka Stephen Gordon, passed away after a long fight with cancer. So here it, his last video, not even a month old. Respect.
Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson - I Can Do No Wrong
Good day for some hip hop. Love Apollo's production.
Thursday, October 2, 2014
Red Snapper - Eye Liner Stab
Not throwin' back too far with this one, but it's badass so I'll let it slide.
The Servant - Cells
Remember this track? It didn't actually make the film (I don't think) but it got a lot of airtime from that killer Sin City trailer. This is the full track, it's still great.
Massive Attack - Just A Matter Of Time
Throwback Thursday? Sure, that works. This is a little-viewed short film directed by the late Roger Pomphrey circa 1990. Amazing how Massive's sound has evolved since.

Bilbo Baggins - Back Home
So I was going to post Leonard Nimoy's "Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins", but then I guess I already did a couple years ago. Instead I found this band, I do believe it will suffice.
Christopher Lee - In The Willow Meads Of Tasarinan
Here's one that I did know about. Christopher Lee probably would have made a pretty awesome Treebeard, but I suppose he did just fine as Saruman.
Ed Sheeran - I See Fire
So it was "Hobbit Day" a short while ago, which apparently is celebrated on the anniversary of the release of The Hobbit. I am a Tolkien fan, and am looking forward to the upcoming completion of the movie trilogy (despite its glaring incongruencies with the book), but this seems like taking things a bit too far. Meh, who am I to judge? Might as well just jump on the bandwagon. Happy belated Hobbit Day! Here's a relevant song with millions of views that I had no idea existed.
